The GloFish is a genetically modified fluorescent zebrafish. It became the first genetically modified animal to become so popular and open to the public as a pet.
In 1999, Dr. Zhiyuan Gong and his colleagues at the National University of Singapore were the first to create the GloFish. By taking a green fluorescent protien gene from the jellyfish and inserting it into a zebrafish, it caused the fish brightly fluorescent. They repeated this experiment to develop a series of other fluorescent colors.
GloFish were introduced to the United States market in 2003. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had to ensure the fish pose no threat to the food supply. They also discovered that the fish pose no threat to the environment. Now the GloFish are widely sold in the U.S. and has become very popular, especially in Michigan.
